An Open Letter from Margaret

December 21, 2011

Destiny – a state or end that seemingly has been decided beforehand.

The word destiny comes from the feminine Anglo-French version of the word destine’ meaning doom or preordain. But here at the Women’s Fund we know that destiny is not by chance but by the choices that are made.  That’s because every day, we see firsthand examples of how the social change programs we fund create opportunities for women and girls to determine their own destiny.

You have wisely chosen to invest in us.  Through your donations, we have been able to provide financial support to organizations throughout our community with a singular focus – giving women and girls the skills to direct their own destiny.

We have followed this path for twenty-five years – a major accomplishment in itself.  Through our grant making efforts, particularly the social change grants program, we have seen new women leaders: emerge in local politics, lead the economic justice movement, address racial disparities, and work to reduce the high infant mortality rate.  Our capacity building programs include our Social Change Exchange – a forum that provides the knowledge women need to impact social change. Our Her Scholarship program provides financial support to low income women over 35 who want to return to school.  Girls Leading Change is a new program that is engaging teenage girls of color in leadership roles in the philanthropy community – thus insuring that a new generation of donors is being developed in new ways that allows them to direct their own destiny.

Donate to the Women’s Fund to honor a woman or girl in your life.

Donate to the Women’s Fund in celebration of our 25th Anniversary.

Donate to the Women’s Fund because you can.

When destiny calls, answer back – not by accepting the call as though there is nothing that can be done about it – but by deciding you want to give women and girls a chance to control it.

It’s choice, not chance, that determines our destinies.

Thank you for making a choice to support the Women’s Fund.
