WF Civic Break Replay: WI Spring Elections 2026

Spring elections shape what happens closest to home. This Civic Break made sure you’re ready.

This session featured Kristen Hansen, Wisconsin state lead for the Fair Elections Center, who broke down what’s on your ballot this spring, why these races matter for your day-to-day life, and how to research candidates when information is hard to find.

Spring elections in Wisconsin are technically nonpartisan, no party labels appear on the ballot, but the outcomes directly affect public schools, local infrastructure, judicial decisions, and community safety. Historically, spring turnout has been low, averaging just 12% between 2006 and 2014. That number climbed to a record 52% of the voting-age population in 2025, but there is still significant room to grow.

Session highlights:

  • Why spring elections matter: school boards, judges, mayors, county boards, and other local offices that shape daily life
  • How to use myvote.wi.gov to check your registration, find your polling place, and preview your ballot
  • Practical research strategies for under-the-radar candidates, including campaign websites, endorsement lists, LinkedIn profiles, local news interviews, and social media
  • The Wisconsin Supreme Court race and how to access nonpartisan candidate information through guides.vote
  • Early voting logistics, absentee ballot requirements, witness signature rules, and same-day voter registration

The session also touched on two timely civic actions: the importance of poll worker recruitment ahead of the fall election cycle, and the SAVE Act currently before the U.S. Senate, which would give the Department of Homeland Security authority to review voter eligibility for all registered voters… not only new registrants.
