demin day: Standing with Survivors, Challenging Misconceptions
Denim Day is a global awareness campaign that honors survivors of sexual violence and works to end victim blaming. The movement began in 1999 after an Italian woman was raped by her driving instructor. In a shocking decision, Italy’s highest court overturned the perpetrator’s conviction, claiming that because the victim wore tight jeans, she must have helped remove them, implying consent. This injustice sparked a worldwide response, as women and men in Italy, Europe, and the United States came together to wear jeans as a symbol of solidarity with survivors and a call to challenge the myths surrounding sexual assault.
Here in greater Milwaukee, the Denim Day campaign is active and impactful, with the Women’s Fund proudly serving as a fiscal sponsor to support its mission and amplify its reach.
